Circular trail, start/finish: parking lot at Bürgerhaus Birgel, Wiesbaumer Str. 1, 54587 Birgel, length: 7.1 km, duration: 2 hours

In the forest, you will come across the Black Cross and the Hubertus oak.

The approx. 7 km long circular route starts at the community center in Birgel. First you pass the Hubertus Chapel. The chapel, which dates back to the 16th century, has an impressive star vault in the choir and nave and a bell from the 16th century. You continue along the sports field and pass the Birgeler Hardt natural monument, a red sandstone rock, a geological feature of the region. Shortly afterwards, you turn into the forest and spend a long time in the shady and cool woods. On the way, you will come across the Schwarzkreuz, in memory of Magdalena Schwarz, who was struck by lightning while herding cattle in 1911. The cross was later misused for shooting practice by the French during the Second World War. Later, the Hubertus oak tree lies along the path. A pedunculate oak from 1750 with a height of 23m and a circumference of 2.5m. Finally, you leave the forest and walk through fields to the viewpoint above the sports field.

Beautiful view of the Kyllaue to the south of Birgel.

The hiking trail is marked LB 4 throughout and from the car park we turn onto the main road and can already see the Hubertus Chapel on the right-hand side. We continue along the main road and turn onto An der Ley at the petrol station. We follow this road until we reach the sports field, circle it and keep left. Soon after, the path turns off into the forest and we walk past the Schwarzkreuz and Hubertuseiche. On leaving the forest, we turn left onto a tarmac path and follow it through the fields until we reach the viewpoint above the sports field. At the end of the Hardtweg, we keep right and reach the village road via the road by the pond. At the end of Dorfstraße, keep right and after a few steps you will see the Birgel community centre on the right-hand side.

Hiking in the Eifel is a lot of fun if you are well prepared. Wear clothing suitable for the weather and sturdy footwear. Take provisions, drinks and a mobile phone with you. Take care! Especially in autumn, leaves lying on the ground can cover uneven surfaces and pose a risk of slipping.

Wear sturdy shoes and clothing suitable for the weather.
