On the circular trail around the Eigelbacher Maar, we encounter the oldest rocks in the region: sandstones from the Lower Devonian, a good 400 million years old. They are also home to small carbonaceous limestones, which are among the oldest relics of life on the then barren mainland of our planet Earth.
The crater of the Eigelbach dry maar, on the other hand, which is about 1 km across and a good 120 deep, is a geologically young structure from the Quaternary period, only a few hundred thousand years old. Compared to other Eifel maars, today's dry maar lies at a surprisingly high altitude of 420 to 550m! Take a look!
The start and finish of this hike is the village hall in Kopp, which is located in Eigelbacher Straße. We walk up the road a little to the north until the trail markings indicate the turn-off to the left onto an agricultural path. After around two kilometers, the Eigelbacher Trockenmaar is in front of us, in whose maar basin lies the small district of Eigelbach. Our path leads us around the dry maar, partly through a picturesque landscape with sandstones from the Lower Devonian, which are several million years old.
We return parallel to the Eigelbach stream. After a good hour and 30 minutes, we return to the starting point in Kopp via Birresborner Straße. We recommend stopping off at the nearby Wolffhotel.
