Römisches Matronenheiligtum Görresburg

The partially reconstructed Gallo-Roman temple complex "Görresburg" is located on a high plateau between Nettersheim and Marmagen and offers a beautiful view over the Eifel landscape.

From the 2nd to the 4th century, there was a Roman settlement along the Agrippa road from Trier to Cologne (one of the most important Roman north-south connections north of the Alps). The partially reconstructed Galloroman temple complex "Görresburg" formed the northern end of this settlement.
The site is located on a high plateau between Nettersheim and Marmagen and offers a beautiful view of the Eifel landscape. The temple complex consists of three nearly square buildings surrounded by a low wall.

In this sanctuary, native protective and mother deities known as the Aufan Matronae were worshipped from the 1st century until around 400 AD. The deities can be seen on the replicas of the dedication stones that are placed around the larger main temple. Even today, offerings such as fruits or crops can be found in front of the dedication stones.

The Matronae sanctuary "Görresburg" is a worthwhile detour on the long-distance hiking trail Eifelsteig (stage 6).
