The history of the Alte Klus

The Alte Klus was built in 1818 and bears witness to the determination and faith of the citizens of Frotheim, who fought for the construction of their own sacred building despite adverse circumstances. Because they belonged to the parish of Gehlenbeck, the people of Frotheim had until then had to travel long distances to attend church services. But with the construction of the Klus, the building costs of which were financed by a considerable collection of donations from the village community, Frotheim finally had its own chapel.

A biblical saying can be read on the lintel of the Klus, quoting Psalm 26, verse 8: "Lord, I love the place of your house and the place where your glory dwells." This saying is a reminder of the deep bond between the people and their chapel.

The Klus is a simple half-timbered building with a characteristic three-sided choir. The interior of the chapel is simple, with a brick floor and original pews that have been preserved to this day. The historic organ sits enthroned above the altar and the pulpit is located on the southern chancel wall. A bell rider rises above the entrance, crowning the simple building. Thanks to extensive restoration work, the chapel now shines again in its original splendor.

The organ - a sound from the 18th century

In 1818, the then teacher Detering bought an organ for the Klus from the Hüffe estate. The organ, which was made in 1791 by organ builder Georg von Quellhorst, probably from Lavelsloh, is another highlight of the chapel. After being out of use for a long time, it was restored in 1935 and served as an accompaniment for congregational singing until the new cemetery chapel was built in 1970. Following a comprehensive restoration by the Speith company in 1999, the organ is now playable again and is awaiting another overhaul, which is currently being planned.

The Klus bell also plays a special role. Originally installed in the bell rider, it dates back to 1790 and accompanied the villagers throughout their lives - from church services to daily prayers and funerals. During the Second World War, the bell was saved from being melted down and returned to Frotheim intact. After a period in the tower of the elementary school, it was returned to its original place in the Klus in 2005. Today, the bell is once again fully functional and a proud symbol of the village community.

The angels - a finishing touch

In order to restore the Alte Klus to its original splendor, the village community campaigned for the replacement of two figures: the angels, also known as cherubs, which once stood next to the altar. Donations made it possible to have the angels recreated by a master woodworker. Since 2007, the newly designed angels have adorned the chapel and complete the historical image of the Alte Klus.

Events and life in the Alte Klus

Since its fundamental renovation and rededication, the Alte Klus has been a listed building and has developed into a lively venue for events. Numerous celebrations take place here, from weddings and christenings to readings, concerts and Passion devotions. A particularly popular event is the New Year's Eve blowing at the end of the year. The Alte Klus is still a central meeting point for the village community and visitors today.
