Monastery church Karthaus

The monastery church of St Jakobus Karthaus in Dülmen, also known as St Jakobus the Elder, is a listed Roman Catholic parish church with a rich historical past. Originally part of the Marienburg Carthusian monastery, the church now invites visitors to stop and reflect all year round. Information on the emergenceIn 1476, the Carthusian monastery was founded as the only branch of this order in Westphalia. The knight Gerd von Keppel donated his castle, together with his property, to the order. The "silent monks" lived in this building until 1803. The convent building grew through inflowing funds and properties and soon had 22 characteristic, well-organised cell houses. The construction of the church kept pace with the building of the monastery. After many additions and alterations, the late Gothic church made of red brick still appears today as a simple, single-nave vaulted building.
