Vantage point/Observation tower

The Wet Triangle connects the Mittelland Canal with the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Bergeshövede. The important account point for inland navigation is also known as a popular destination for tourists. With its red lookout pavilion and memorial stone, the Red Triangle makes a nice stop on a cycling or hiking tour through Münsterland.

History

The Nasse Dreieck was built in 1916 in the Bergeshövede district of Hörstel. The idea was to link the newly built Mittelland Canal with the Dortmund-Ems Canal inaugurated by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1899. And so it came to pass. After nine years of construction, the Bevergern-Minden section was opened in 1915 and the Minden-Hanover section the following year.

The Nasse Dreieck developed further in the following years with a lock and several bridges. Restaurants and other businesses followed. Today, only the harbour and a bunker station still bear witness to this. The emergence of motorised self-propelled boats declined and towboat navigation in the canals was discontinued.

Therefore, the Wet Triangle lies in idyllic tranquillity today. With the covered lookout point "Red Box" at the Wet Triangle, there is nevertheless plenty to discover on your own cycling or walking tour.
